After wandering in the desert, complaining and homesick, the Israelites are told to camp out at Mount Sinai. And, in the morning, they see the smoking and shaking mountain, lightening, and the sound of the shofar. Commentators notice that the Torah seems to say that at the moment of revelation, the Israelites saw the sounds.
