Mishpatim
Last week, with the smoking mountain and shofar, the Israelites saw G!d. They knew they wanted to have a relationship with the Divine, but the revelation itself did not translate into action. This week, the Israelites receive tangible laws and ordinances--mishpatim--to teach them how to be in relationship with each other and G!d, and live the Torah in a real way. In the midst of giving over these laws G!d says, “You shall be people of holiness unto Me.” The Kotzker Rebbe beautifully emphasizes the word people, explaining, “G!d has no lack of sublime angels, seraphim, or holy beings. G!d longs for the holiness of people.” Through the laws we receive in this week’s parsha--most of which speak of how we are to treat one another--we are not being asked to transcend our humanness, instead, we are asked to be fully human. How can we be more human in our relationships with each other and with the Divine?
