Behind this piece: When we leave our homes to embark on a journey, it is customary to say a prayer for the way, tefilat haderech. We first see the basic text of this prayer in the Talmud (Brachot 29b),“May it be Your will, my G!d, that You lead me towards peace, direct my steps toward peace, support me toward peace, and rescue me from the hand of any enemy or ambush on the way, and send blessing upon my handiwork, and give me favour, generosity and mercy in Your eyes and the eyes of all who see me. Blessed are You, Hashem, who hears prayer.” This didn’t sound quite right to Abaye, who commented, “One should always merge himself with the community.”Therefore, the text of tefilat haderech is written in the plural, to include us, whoever is traveling with us, and all travelers everywhere. As we begin to venture from our homes, our block, our neighborhood for the first time in over a year, let us bless one another for safe and peaceful journeys.Graphic says “shetolicheinu, v’tatzideinu, v’tismacheinu, v’tadricheinu,” excerpted from tefilat haderech.
