Teruma
This week, the Israelites are commanded to step into a new stage in their relationship with G!d. Like we sometimes see with two people who meet, fall in love, make a commitment to one another, and build a home together, the Israelites are commanded to build a home for G!d. The home they are asked to build--the Mishkan--is portable. In this way their sacred home with G!d can accompany them as they wander through the desert for many more years. The Netivot Shalom asks, “How is this mitzvah [to build the mishkan] eternal?” Since it was only something we were commanded to do in that specific time and place. He answers his own question in this way, “Every person is an entire world before G!d, and thus we are commanded to make a mishkan inside of us, in our bodies. This is why G!d says, ‘and I will dwell in them,’ meaning in each and every person.” How can you build a mishkan for G!d to dwell within you, as you move through various places and transitions in life? What does your sacred home feel like?
