Behar
This week, we get a new commandment. G!d says to Moshe: Speak to the Israelite people and say to them: When you enter the land that I assign to you, the land shall observe a sabbath for G!d.This commandment is known as the shmita year, the Sabbatical year for the land. Just like human beings get a Shabbat, so too does the land, which is alive and gives us so much. Why, in our verse, does it say that the shmita year is לַיהוָֽה׃, for G!d? The Kedushat Levi explains beautifully, “The land does not have to rest for reasons of being tired. The land which had served people during the preceding six years, having been at human disposal, will take out a year and revert to being at G’d’s disposal, so to speak.” At it essence, land is ownerless, belonging only to the Holy One.How does this change how you relate to the earth?
