Vayelech

This week, still standing at the edge of the Jordan, Moshe continues his speech to the Israelite people on the last day of his life. He calls to his successor Joshua, saying:חֲזַ֣ק וֶאֱמָץ֒ כִּ֣י אַתָּ֗ה תָּבוֹא֙ אֶת־הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה אֶל־הָאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר נִשְׁבַּ֧ע יְהוָ֛ה לַאֲבֹתָ֖ם לָתֵ֣ת לָהֶ֑ם וְאַתָּ֖ה תַּנְחִילֶ֥נָּה אוֹתָֽם׃Be strong and resolute, for it is you who shall go with this people into the land that G!d swore to their fathers to give them, and it is you who shall apportion it to them.Three times in this week’s parsha do we read the words חֲזַ֣ק וֶאֱמָץ֒, be strong and resolute, which we also read in psalm 27 every day during these days of awe:קַוֵּ֗ה אֶל־יְה֫וָ֥ה חֲ֭זַק וְיַאֲמֵ֣ץ לִבֶּ֑ךָ וְ֝קַוֵּ֗ה אֶל־יְהוָֽה׃Look to G!d; be strong and resolute, hope to G!d.As we read, pray and contemplate our mortality and the fleeting nature of life during these aseret yamei teshuva, ten days of returning, perhaps we can take Moshe’s advice before he left the world. Be strong and resolute, strong enough to face the difficult themes of these days, and resolute to keep striving for a life of wholeness and peace.
