Vayigash

After being thrown in the pit by his brothers, Yosef has gone from servant to prisoner and now has ascended to the role of Pharaoh’s right hand man. In the midst of the famine, Yosef’s brothers come to Egypt, beseeching Yosef for food, although they do not recognize him as their brother. Yosef puts them through many tests, and hides his heartbreak throughout. Finally, he cannot hold back anymore. He tells them everything, and he cries. In his crying, the brothers’ hearts softened. Rashbam tells us that up until this moment, Yosef had practiced restraint in every one of his actions with his brothers. They never truly saw him until now. And now, in his vulnerability, there is hope for healing between them. Perhaps in our tears lies the most potential for healing.
