Shemot

This week, we enter the book of Shemot, which tells the story of the slavery and freedom of our people from Egypt. It is no coincidence that in the book of Shemot, Names, we also get a new name for G!d: אֶֽהְיֶ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶֽהְיֶ֑ה, I will be what I will be. Or, as Rebbe Nachman beautifully translates it: I am prepared to be. He explains that, through the process of returning to ourselves we are declaring our readiness to exist in the world, our readiness to be present. When we are ready to fully exist, we embody this G!dly name of Ehyeh. Particularly in times of struggle, such as in this week’s Parsha, the quality of simply being is so important, so healing. How can you cultivate more presence, more existence, in your life?
