Beshalach

This is it. This week, standing by the foot of the sea, G!d tells Moshe to lift his staff. The sea breaks in two and, in awe, the Israelites cross through it. Crossing the narrow straits to be birthed as a new people--a free people. Perhaps not everyone was able to be in awe. A midrash tells a story: two Israelites were crossing the sea, and as they looked at the mud on the seafloor, one looks to the other and says, “Mud in Egypt and mud at the sea--mud and bricks in Egypt and mud of the many waters at the sea.” Looking at the mud on their sandals, they missed the miracle of the sea splitting, for they never looked up.It’s very easy to miss a miracle. It’s very easy to focus on the mud on our shoes rather than looking up at the sea. Look up this week, what do you see?
