Vayeshev

Yosef, the dreamer, is his father’s most beloved son. He carries himself with a pride that evokes jealousy and rage in his brothers. In a fit of anger, the brother’s throw Yosef into the pit, where he is then sold to slavery. The Netivot Shalom compares this pit to a furrow in the ground, where a seed lay ready to sprout. Within every seed is a kusta deheyuta, “tiny speck of life.” In order for that speck of life to be actualized, the outside of the seed nearly completely disintegrates into the earth before it can sprout. In Yosef’s story, we see this play out. The outer shell of his pride falls away, and he soon finds his purpose in the world and can lead in truth. In this darkest time of the year, can you sense the kusta deheyuta within?
