This week, we read the wordsכִּ֣י תִקְצֹר֩ קְצִֽירְךָ֨ בְשָׂדֶ֜ךָ וְשָֽׁכַחְתָּ֧ עֹ֣מֶר בַּשָּׂדֶ֗ה לֹ֤א תָשׁוּב֙ לְקַחְתּ֔וֹ לַגֵּ֛ר לַיָּת֥וֹם וְלָאַלְמָנָ֖ה יִהְיֶ֑ה לְמַ֤עַן יְבָרֶכְךָ֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ בְּכֹ֖ל מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יָדֶֽיךָ׃ When you reap the harvest in your field and overlook a sheaf in the field, do not turn back to get it; it shall go to the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow—in order that your G!d may bless you in all your undertakings. It’s no mistake that this and many other commandments that are ben adam l’chavero, between human beings, come during this month of Elul, a time of reflection on our lives and actions before the Days of Awe. However, this verse contains something unique. The word “turn back,” תָשׁוּב֙, is the same root of the word תָשׁוּב֙ה returning to oneself that is the focus of the month of Elul and the Days of Awe. And yet, this verse offers us the reminder that as we are turning towards who we want to be in the world, we also need to not turn back to the ways we once were. May this Elul be a time of turning towards and returning to our essence.
