Behind this piece: There is a natural feeling of awe and wonder when we experience or witness something for the first time. The first time we hear the Shofar in the New Year, the first time we shake the Lulav and Etrog during Sukkot, just to name a few, usher in a new season that inspires us to bless the Source of Life for bringing us to this moment, to a new year. There is a blessing for such an expression of gratitude for being alive and present to bear witness to this moment,בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יהוה, אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, שֶׁהֶחֱיָֽינוּ וְקִיְּמָנוּ וְהִגִּיעָנוּ לַזְּמָן הַזֶּהBaruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Haolam, shehechiyanu, v’kiy’manu, v’higianu lazman hazeh.Blessed are You, Hashem our G!d, Ruler of the Universe, who has given us life, sustained us and allowed us to arrive in this moment.Such a blessing can be said not only on performing a mitzvah for the first time, but on anything that is a first, or anything that shakes you from your day to day into a feeling of awe and wonder at the miracle of being alive. As we usher in a new political period in the United States, and see the first Woman of Color get ready to occupy the White House as Vice President, we thank the Source of Life for bringing us to this moment in history.
