Re’eh
This week, as Moshe prepares to leave the world at the edge of the Holy Land, he gives the Israelite people more warnings to ensure that they stay on the path. Do not heed the words of that prophet or that dream-diviner. For Hashem your God is testing you to see whether you really love Hashem your God with all your heart and soul. Why does G!d need to test our love like a jealous partner? Shouldn’t the One who knows all of our innermost thoughts and feelings be beyond testing our love? Rambam explains that it’s not about proving our love to G!d, but rather about proving it to ourselves and the rest of the world. And yet, prophets are tempting. Sometimes all we want is for someone to tell us that everything is going to be alright, or warn us for what’s ahead so we can prepare. Perhaps we are warned against prophets and dream-diviners because, by following them, we can easily lose touch with our own sense of what’s right for us and for the world. What would it mean to truly trust yourself, your own mind, and G!d, leaning into the mystery of our lives?
