Vayeira
This week, Moshe asks Pharoah to let his people be freed from slavery in Egypt. He also tries to convince the Jewish people that they will, in fact, be freed. Since their souls had been crushed by the weight of oppression, they were unable to hear him. G!d, through Moshe, performs many signs and wonders in Egypt. Like a mantra, we read after each plague has completed וַֽיֶּחֱזַק֙ לֵ֣ב פַּרְעֹ֔ה, Pharaoh's heart was hardened. At the beginning of this parsha, we learn that G!d is responsible for hardening Pharaoh's heart, in order to show signs and wonders to Egypt. Perhaps this hardening of Pharaoh's heart was also for the Jewish people, giving them the wake up call they needed to be really ready for freedom. Being a slave in Egypt/mitzrayim also means to be a slave to our mitzrayim, our narrow places: addictions, patterns and behaviors. It often takes a major wake up call for us to be willing and able to be freed, ready to move forward out of the narrowness.
